Understanding the Brain

Understanding the Brain | 7.02 GB

AVI | 56 kbps | 512 x 384
Taught by Jeanette Norden | Vanderbilt University | Ph.D., Vanderbilt University School of Medicine
36 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture | $374.95

Understanding the Brain, a 36-lecture course by award-winning Professor Jeanette Norden of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, takes you inside this astonishingly complex organ and shows you how it works, from the gross level of its organization to the molecular level of how cells in the brain communicate. With its combination of neurology, biology, and psychology, this course will help you understand how we perceive the world through our senses, how we move, how we learn and remember, and how emotions affect our thoughts and actions.

As you read this, your brain is alive with a flurry of activity, including:

* directing the movement of your eyes
* decoding the electrical impulses from your retina
* recognizing the pattern of words and phrases and extracting their meaning
* controlling your breathing, heart rate, and body temperature
* adjusting your posture
* screening out the buzz of background stimuli

Everything that goes on inside your body and every interaction you have with the outside world is controlled by your brain. It allows you to cope masterfully with your everyday environment. It is capable of producing breathtaking athletic feats, sublime works of art, and profound scientific insights. It also produces the enormous range of emotional responses that can take us from the depths of depression to the heights of euphoria.

Considering everything the brain does, how can this relatively small mass of tissue possibly be the source of our personalities, dreams, thoughts, sensations, utterances, and movements?

Solving the Mystery of the Brain

The ancient Egyptians discarded the brain during mummification while carefully preserving other organs; to them, the brain was of no importance. Starting with the Greek physician Hippocrates, however, observers began tracing more and more of our sensory, nervous, and intellectual activities to the brain—and eventually to specific regions of the brain.

The brain is still a mystery in many respects—for example, we still are unsure as to how consciousness is generated—but recent decades have seen unparalleled advances in understanding how the brain does what it does. In the last 50 years, an explosion of knowledge about the brain's structure and function has occurred. Scientists have performed amazing research by using tools such as MRIs and PET scanning to get a better grasp on deciphering the mysteries of how this important organ works.

Due to these technological advances, we can now pinpoint:

* where light that enters the eye is converted into the subjective experience of sight
* where pressure waves that reach the ear are processed into sound
* where fear is generated
* which areas of the brain are involved in spoken and written language
* where the deep chemistry of love is kindled

What You Will Learn

Understanding the Brain provides you with an in-depth view of the inner workings of your brain. Your tour starts with the organization of the central nervous system at the gross, cellular, and molecular levels, then investigates in detail how the brain accomplishes a host of tasks—from seeing and sleeping to performing music and constructing a personal identity.

* The Structure of the Brain: Lectures 1–11 cover the cellular structure and the overall layout of this intricate organ. You learn how the brain develops during gestation, and are introduced to the technical vocabulary that you will use throughout the course.
* Brain and Mind: Lectures 12–19 explore how the brain and mind are thought to be related by examining the sensory functions of sight, hearing, and bodily sensation. You analyze the motor system, which governs how movement is initiated and coordinated, and explore Parkinson's disease and its progressive impairment of movement.
* Higher-Order Cognitive Functions: Lectures 20–29 discuss the areas of the brain thought to be responsible for language, emotion, executive function, and cognition—abilities that, in large part, define us as humans. You look at the underlying neurological mechanisms and explore their role in various phenomena like depression, musical ability and appreciation, and drug use.
* Special Topics: Lectures 30–36 look at several subjects of universal interest. Are the brains of males and females different? How does the brain regulate sleep and dreaming? What is consciousness? And how can you understand the signs and symptoms of Alzheimer's disease?

Our insights into the functioning of the brain often come from cases where something has gone wrong, such as strokes, tumors, injuries, neurological diseases, and mental illnesses—pathologies that vividly demonstrate the distinct roles played by the various affected regions. An expert neuroscientist, Dr. Norden provides a fascinating presentation of these cases.

Know Your Mind

We now know that something important is always going on inside our brain and, as Understanding the Brain illustrates, if you know what to look for, you can observe specific aspects of your own brain in action:

* Vision: The "now you see it, now you don't" feeling you get when you see an illusion is your brain trying to interpret raw data from the eyes. Far from taking a picture of the world and sending it to the brain, the eyes actually transmit very little information; "seeing" is a creation of the brain.
* Thought: Sometimes, you can have trouble thinking after taking an antihistamine. This is because antihistamines do not just combat the effects of an allergy, they also block histamine as a neurotransmitter in the brain, altering your ability to think and process information.
* Motor skills: When you learn how to walk, ride a bicycle, knit, dance, or perform some other motor skill, you reach a point where all of a sudden you are able to coordinate the new movement. That is because specialized neurons in your brain's cerebellum are now firing in sequence.
* Emotion and memory: Think about doing your taxes. Does that thought elicit a particular emotion? We do not just remember something; our memories are colored with emotion. All of our experiences are influenced by previous experiences through complex loops in the brain's limbic system.
* Social bonding: Your feeling of well-being with your spouse or friends has a neurochemical basis. The neurotransmitter oxytocin is found in very high concentrations in the limbic systems of animals that bond socially.
* Consciousness: Sometimes, you can arrive at work with very little memory of the details of your journey; obviously you were not unconscious, but you were not fully aware either. This occurs when your brain is in "autopilot" mode—where it was in control without your being conscious of all that was happening around you.

Appreciate the Wonder of the Brain

As a researcher, Dr. Norden has participated in an ongoing scientific revolution. She is also a nationally recognized educator, singled out as one of the most effective teachers in America in What the Best College Teachers Do. Among Dr. Norden's special qualities cited in the book is this simple, but highly effective, approach to teaching: "Before she begins the first class in any semester, she thinks about the awe and excitement she felt the first time anyone explained the brain to her, and she considers how she can help her students achieve that same feeling."

You can share her consuming passion for the intricacies of the brain in this lively and engaging course, which Dr. Norden has designed specifically for those without a background in science. "All you need to bring is your own brain and a desire to learn," she says.

Thus equipped, you will explore a broad range of exciting topics in neuroscience. Above all, you will come away from Understanding the Brain with a deeper knowledge of how the brain is organized—and a feeling of wonder and appreciation for all that it accomplishes.

High School Level - Chemistry

High School Level - Chemistry | 5,11 GB

Avi | 512 x 384 | 100 kbps
Taught by Frank Cardulla | Retired, Niles North High School, Chicago, Illinois | M.S., University of Illinois
30 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture | $254.95

Chemistry teachers will tell you that there is an experience they have all had many times. Someone will ask them, "What do you do for a living?" and when they reply, "I'm a chemistry teacher," the all-too-common response is:

"That was my worst subject!"

Why is that? Is high school chemistry just so intrinsically difficult that only students with great intellectual gifts are capable of succeeding without heroic efforts?

The Easiest Class in School

Professor Frank Cardulla doesn't believe that for a moment, and he will hopefully convince you, as he has thousands of high school students, that "chemistry is the easiest class in school."

Students often claim it is the math that is difficult. But high school chemistry normally only demands that students be able to add, subtract, multiply, and divide numbers and do some simple algebra. Calculators take care of the first four, and most students can handle the latter.

It's not the math that some students find difficult. It's the requirement to engage in what might be called "quantitative reasoning"—the ability to take the numbers presented in what are often called "word" or "story" problems and put them together in the proper way to arrive at the correct answer. Should the numbers be multiplied or divided? And if divided, how do you know which number to put in the numerator and which in the denominator?

This difficulty is far and away what "turns off" many students to chemistry, and it is addressing this difficulty that is the focus of these chemistry lectures.

The Hardest Parts Have Simple Answers

As Professor Cardulla puts it, "My goal in these lectures is not to quickly cover every topic that is typically included in most high school chemistry courses. Most students don't need a lot of help learning element symbols or memorizing definitions. With reasonable effort they can learn the basic structure of atoms and how the Periodic Table works. That isn't the stumbling block. It's quantitative reasoning—solving those story problems. It's the mole concept and its application to stoichiometry, molarity, and equilibrium. This is what frustrates so many, because they think solving these kinds of problems requires either some exceptional intellect or some kind of 'special' approach totally divorced from the kind of quantitative reasoning we all use naturally and often effortlessly in everyday life. It doesn't."

He justifies this statement by showing how "chemical" reasoning is nothing more than an extension of the kind of quantitative reasoning that most of us use every day. Once this base is firmly established, this simple, natural reasoning is then applied to most of the important problem-solving situations that face high school chemistry students, from density, to the mole, to molarity, stoichiometry, and equilibrium.

Genuine Understanding that Lasts

Professor Cardulla refuses to have students learn mathematical "gimmicks" that allow them to obtain correct answers to simple problems without any real understanding, only to have them fall apart later when problems are encountered that demand understanding.

Instead, he establishes a firm foundation—a foundation based on a real and deep understanding of basic concepts and how one can apply the kind of simple, natural quantitative reasoning we all use every day to what are truly simple chemistry problems once this basic understanding is established. It is this basis of true understanding that makes chemistry "the easiest class in school."

Professor Cardulla has published articles and given numerous presentations about this simple, logical approach, and the achievements of his students bear testimony to its effectiveness. He has received citations from institutions such as MIT and the University of Chicago for being named "most influential teacher" by attending students.

He has received several teaching awards, among them the Davidson Award, a Presidential Award for Science Teaching, the National Catalyst Award for Outstanding Chemistry Teaching, and the National James Bryant Conant Award. The latter two are given to only one high school chemistry teacher in the entire United States each year.

Throughout this tutorial, Professor Cardulla uses, in equal measure, the blackboard, a flipchart on an easel, and computer-generated graphic screens to illustrate his lessons, which also include about a dozen physical demonstrations.

My Favorite Universe

My Favorite Universe | 1,5 GB

Lecturer: Neil deGrasse Tyson | Publisher: The Teaching Company | ISBN 9783898428682 | $39.95
Course No. 158 (12 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)

In My Favorite Universe, the Princeton astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson who directs the nation's most famous planetarium takes you on a spirited and intellectually engaging journey through the cosmos and all its history, from before the Big Bang to the most likely ways in which Earth, and perhaps the entire universe, might end.

Clear Science Teaching to Set the Stage for an Awe-Inspiring Course

Created for a lay audience and readily accessible, in this course science always takes precedence over drama. The lectures are certainly entertaining, often funny, even awe-inspiring at times, as befits the subject matter.

Even though you will be entertained, you will be learning good science.

Clear introductions to essential principles of physics support these lectures, including density, quantum theory, gravity, and the General Theory of Relativity. Professor Neil deGrasse Tyson also includes forays into disciplines such as chemistry and biology as needed to explain events in astronomy.

For example, Dr. Tyson begins one lecture at a point 13 billion years ago, when all space, matter, and energy in the known universe were contained in a volume less than one-trillionth the size of a pinpoint—about the size of a single atom. By the time he finishes, the cosmos has been stretched, the planets and our Earth formed, and 70 percent of existing Earth species have been wiped out by a gigantic asteroidclearing the way for the evolution of humanity.

Along the way he has touched on Einstein's famous equation, E=mc2; on the four forces that were once unified in the early cosmos in a way physicists are still trying to explain; and on the chemical enrichment of the universe by exploding supernovae, which give the universe its necessary supply of heavier elements including oxygen, nitrogen, iron and, most important, carbon.

Carbon, we learn, is a "sticky" atom, capable of making more kinds of molecules than all other elements combined. It's the ideal element with which to experiment in the building of life forms and is, of course, the element responsible for the remarkable diversity of life, including us.

As Dr. Tyson notes, we are made of stardust, just as the planets are. And he has created a course that explains exactly how that came to be, beginning with a grounding in the basic "machinery" of matter, forces, and energy that has been discovered on Earth and which also reveals itself throughout the universe.

The Stark and Violent Beauty of the Universe

With this basic foundation in place, explanations of cosmic events fall logically into place, and the realities of the universe—including its eventual demise—are revealed in stark and often violent beauty. You learn:

* how Saturn's rings were formed, and why they will eventually be lost
* why low-density conditions are necessary to produce the drama of the northern and southern auroras
* why even the most jagged and wild of the Earth's mountain ranges are, from a cosmic standpoint, really part of a perfectly smooth sphere
* how black holes are formed and the extraordinary way in which they can wreak havoc in the universe
* how asteroids moving through space represent threats of extraordinary consequence to Earth, no matter how long those threats may take to be realized
* why the seemingly infinite panorama of celestial bodies revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope's famous "Deep Field" so intrigued astronomers
* how astronomers actually look for new planets,
* why the odds seem overwhelmingly in favor of some kind of life out there, whether we ever make contact or not.

Most important, none of these ideas are presented as isolated "space factoids" that serve no purpose but to entertain. They are there to illustrate and reinforce the key principles of physics and astrophysics that are continually being presented in this course.

But the inclusion of real science doesn't prevent Dr. Tyson from having some fun, either.

When it's time to show how a black hole might remove one from the universe, he leads you right up to the "event horizon" and slips you in—feet first. Since the event horizon represents the point within which nothing, not even light, can escape, you might think this is a bad idea. And you would be right.

But as you plummet toward the "singularity" at the heart of the black hole, you will learn firsthand about the interesting effects of gravity truly unleashed, including what physicists refer to, with a straight face, as "spaghettification." (Actually, Professor Tyson recommends that you be sucked in to a large black hole rather than a small one. You'll still be spaghettified, but it won't happen as quickly.)

But make no mistake: Dr. Tyson does not consider the cosmos a laughing matter, this kind of whimsical touch notwithstanding. In spite of his training, he remains, admittedly, still in awe of his subject. And he has created a course that might well produce the same feeling in you.

Available Exclusively on DVD

In addition to on-screen definitions and text, this course contains about 120 pictures and illustrations of astronomical phenomena including asteroids, planets, nebulae, deep field views of galaxies, views of the Earth from space, the aurora borealis, and black holes.
