Study English - IELTS Preparation

Study English - IELTS Preparation | 3 GB

Pre-Intermediate to Advanced.

Study English - IELTS Preparation is a series of 26 units of work based on video interviews with native speakers of English. Speakers are mostly specialists on topics with relevance to IELTS. The video footage is drawn from science, education and current affairs programmes aired on ABC television (ABC - Australian Broadcasting Corporation).

A key feature of this series is its authentic English usage - unscripted language in specific contexts. English learners work closely with both the spoken and written forms, and experience the subtleties and uses of each form simultaneously. The presenter, while talking through the language features addressed in each episode, involves the participant in the video classroom through listening cues, explanations, tasks and activities.

Each unit is based on a bite-sized 10-minute episode, and uses spoken language to demonstrate aspects of English usage such as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. All key skill areas are addressed, including Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. The episodes are independent of each other and can be worked through in any order.

The episodes draw from a wide range of themes: environment, technology, tourism, medicine, architecture, business and commerce, finance, law, and the sciences - archaeology, psychology, biology and chemistry.

A variety of activities are introduced in the video segments. These activities focus on developing both the spoken and written forms of the language, improving grammatical accuracy and listening skills, expressing ideas, building vocabulary and other aspects of academic English.

The Teaching Company - High School Level - Algebra II DVD

The Teaching Company - High School Level - Algebra II DVD | 5,5 GB

Taught by Murray H. Siegel, Central Arizona College / Ph.D., Georgia State University
Course No. 102 (30 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)

Algebra II is the crucial high school mathematics course in preparing for a college education. College students who have not mastered Algebra II find themselves taking a remedial, noncredit course called Intermediate Algebra. If you are struggling with Algebra II or are preparing to enter college or are currently in college and are struggling with Intermediate Algebra, then this Algebra II video series is for you. Or if you are an adult who has always wanted to master the beauty of mathematics and now wants the opportunity to do so, this course can fulfill that dream. Download the files immediately before they delete it again.

A Man with a Plan

Dr. Murray H. Siegel earned his Ph.D. in Mathematics Education. Kentucky Educational Television named him "The Best Math Teacher in America," and he has received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math Teaching. He has been teaching mathematics for decades to students of all ages, and his methods have been tested and proven in real classrooms.

This course is designed, in its sequencing of lessons and in each subject taught, to produce true understanding—the kind of confident knowledge that eliminates the anxiety many have in mathematics.

In this course, Dr. Siegel not only explains the key concepts and methods of Algebra II, he also takes you "behind the scenes." The 30 half-hour lessons show both how as well as why the methods work, using real-world applications to answer the age-old question in mathematics classes: When will I ever use this? With this series you learn Algebra II in a way you have never learned it before.

The series begins by relating the foundation of algebra—polynomials—to the numbers with which you are already familiar. You learn to operate with them, graph them, and solve polynomial equations.

The course then progresses to another essential algebraic concept—the function. Functions of all types are investigated: linear, polynomial (including quadratic), rational, and recursive.

Even the aspects of Algebra II that are usually considered difficult to teach are treated in a user-friendly manner so that all learners can truly understand these topics. Included in this list are matrices and determinants, imaginary numbers, sequences and series, and logarithms. (Yes, with Dr. Siegel as your guide, even logarithms will make sense!)

The final part of the course includes an introductory lesson in Trigonometry.

One important difference not found in most mathematics lessons is that serious learning is punctuated with humor. Dr. Siegel is not a stand-up comedian (although he was a radio talk show host long ago), but his students have never found him boring.

If you want to succeed in mathematics and have concerns that you can be successful in an Algebra course, then this course is for you. Your efforts will be rewarded and you will thank Dr. Siegel for opening the door to mathematical knowledge and understanding.

Available Exclusively on DVD

Due to the highly visual nature of its subject matter, this course is available only on DVD

Standard Deviants - Physics Power (Learning Physics)

Standard Deviants - Physics Power (Learning Physics) | 715 MB

Only the most intense science geeks have ever considered physics entertaining, but the Standard Deviants, undaunted as ever, do their best to make serious science fun to watch, and therefore memorable, in this two-hour presentation. Utilizing flashy graphics that make the perennial example of Newton being struck with an apple appear positively quaint, the troupe of exuberant young performers starts off by quickly providing the obligatory "what is physics" intro, and then moves into a fast tutorial on scientific notation. With the basics out of the way,

it's time for segments illustrating scalars and vectors, which, in the format followed throughout the DVD, are followed by a review section and a quiz, which the student can either take or skip. More advanced concepts, including one-dimensional kinematics, two-dimensional kinematics, Newton's Laws of Motion, and friction all follow. Physics may not lend itself to the kind of madcap delivery the Standard Deviants have brought to other subjects, but the graphics employed are often brilliant, and the individual lessons are concise and easy to understand. The material has all been approved by an academic panel, and while this presentation is not intended to be a substitute for a course in physics, as a review guide this stands as a solid treatment of a serious subject, made as entertaining as possible. --Robert J. McNamara

Standard Deviants - Learn Biology

Standard Deviants - Learn Biology | 715 MB

The Standard Deviants, a troupe of energetic young performers whose specialty is presenting serious academic subjects in an offbeat manner, turn their attention to the study of life itself in The Dissected World of Biology. Fervently believing that a truly atrocious joke is so memorable that it's a brilliant mnemonic device, the Standard Deviants gleefully ham it up in this production while managing to make solid points about the subject matter. For instance, a presentation on a chemical principle transforms into a James Bond parody in which the protagonist, after a fight with three people playing a water molecule, reveals his name as "Bond... Covalent Bond." Ouch!

A skit about proteins takes place in a beauty shop, and a truly horrendous rock singer moans about being "stuck in the middle of a cell." All this foolishness has a purpose, of course, and there is a serious curriculum hiding just beneath the unorthodox presentation. Cells, DNA, RNA, metabolism, and other concepts of biology are all covered, and a solid academic panel approved the presentation. While this video doesn't intend to be a substitute for a course in biology, it does make the basic concepts easier to remember. --Robert J. McNamara

Wes Carroll - Mouth Drumming Vol.1 & Vol.2

Wes Carroll - Mouth Drumming Vol.1 & Vol.2 | 2.1 GB

The name of Wes Carroll is synonymous with vocal percussion, first as percussionist with Five O' Clock Shadow, and later the House Jacks. In this 65 minute tutorial, Wes demonstrates how he achieves his dynamic, energetic, yet highly musical sound. His emphasis is always on building a fundamental groove, the need for accuracy over speed, and development of solid technique. Covering all of the drum sounds with absolute detail - the use of certain key consonants, formation of patterns etc. - Wes makes sure that the novice percussionist is remembering to have fun, realizing that, without positive reinforcement, a student won't persist. His cheerful and knowledgeable approach shows why he is both a popular teacher and compelling performer - no one puts out more on stage than Wes! If you're a beginner or an advanced 'mouth drummer,' this is the video for you.

American Civil War | 7.01 GB

Taught by Gary W. Gallagher | University of Virginia | Ph.D., The University of Texas at Austin | $519.95
AVI | 128 kbps | 640 x 432 | 48 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture

Between 1861 and 1865, the clash of the greatest armies the Western hemisphere had ever seen turned small towns, little-known streams, and obscure meadows in the American countryside into names we will always remember. In those great battles streams ran red with blood, and the United States was truly born.

Leading Civil War historian Professor Gary W. Gallagher richly details the effects of the Civil War on all Americans. You'll learn how armies were recruited, equipped, and trained. You'll learn about the hard lot of prisoners. You'll hear how soldiers on both sides dealt with the rigors of camp life, campaigns, and the terror of combat. You'll understand how slaves and their falling masters responded to the advancing war. And you will see the desperate price paid by the families so many left behind.

AVI | 192 kbps | 720 x 480 | 12 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture

Life is full of probabilities. Every time you choose something to eat, you deal with probable effects on your health. Every time you drive your car, probability gives a small but measurable chance that you will have an accident. Every time you buy a stock, play poker, or make plans based on a weather forecast, you are consigning your fate to probability.

What Are the Chances? Probability Made Clear helps you understand the random factors that lurk behind almost everything—from the chance combinations of genes that produced you to the high odds that the waiting time at a bus stop will be longer than the average time between buses if they operate on a random schedule.

In 12 stimulating half-hour lectures, you will explore the fundamental concepts and fascinating applications of probability.

reat Masters - Haydn - His Life and Music

Great Masters - Haydn - His Life and Music | 1.4 GB

The music of Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809) is so technically superb, so widely imitated, and so rich in quality and quantity that almost since the moment of its creation it has exemplified the Classical style.

More than any other single composer, it was Haydn who created the Classical-era symphony. And his 68 string quartets? They are the standard by which all other Classical string quartets were and are judged. No less an expert than Mozart wrote that it was from Haydn that he had learned how to write quartets.

And yet this gentle, creative dynamo, who penned more than 1,000 works over a 50-year career and remained musically vital well past middle age, is all too often thought of as an aged figure surpassed and overshadowed by Mozart and Beethoven.

Understanding Linguistics: The Science of Language

Understanding Linguistics: The Science of Language | 6.87 GB

AVI | 105 kbps | 640 x 480 | 36 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture

We all use language every day of our lives. Language, regardless of the particular dialect spoken, is the tool we use to express our wants, our needs, and our feelings.

Recently, many experts who study language have become convinced by an idea about this remarkable human trait that was, only a few decades ago, utterly revolutionary. These experts believe that the capacity for spoken language and the rules for its structure are not cultural but universal—a set of rules shared by humans in every culture and that even may be hardwired into our brains. Moreover, these rules apply regardless of which of the world's 6,000 languages are being spoken.

The Teaching Company - Museum Masterpieces: The National Gallery, London

The Teaching Company - Museum Masterpieces: The National Gallery, London | 4.5 GB

Of all the world's great art museums, the National Gallery, London is the only place where you can truly grasp the breathtaking scope of European painting between 1200 and 1900.

Established in 1824, the National Gallery was commissioned as the people's museum—a cultural institution meant to reflect the artistic legacy both of Great Britain and of the European continent. Inside its halls are more than 2,500 European paintings by some of Western civilization's greatest masters, including Titian, Rubens, and Rembrandt.

Today, the National Gallery is one of the top five tourist attractions in the United Kingdom. Each year, more than 5 million people explore the gallery's impressive collections, including its renowned and respected holdings in Italian Renaissance art and 17th-century Dutch and Flemish painting. To browse through the hallways and wings of the National Gallery is to witness the powerful evolution both of European painting and the European history that it represents.

Now you can take a virtual tour of this world-class collection through Museum Masterpieces: The National Gallery, London. In 24 fascinating lectures, Professor Catherine B. Scallen, a noted art scholar at Case Western Reserve University, offers a memorable introduction to this remarkable artistic institution and its rich collection of masterworks.

But this is more than just a gallery tour. This course also offers a breathtaking and comprehensive overview of the history of European painting. The National Gallery holds one of the finest collections of European painting from the late medieval period to the beginning of the 20th century. Raphael and Titian, Rembrandt and Rubens, Poussin and Claude, Velazquez and Goya, Gainsborough and Turner—these are just a few of the great masters whose works are represented in the National Gallery's outstanding collection.

Britain's National Treasure

Your tour begins with an introduction that highlights the gallery's unique history, cultural mission, and aesthetic focus. Unlike many national art collections, which developed according to the whims of the ruling monarch, the National Gallery was established and planned with a clear strategy: to amass a sumptuous collection of art that celebrates the zenith of achievement in European painting.

In the first lecture, you gain an appreciation for the careful forethought and commitment to public art that has informed the development of this exceptional collection and has preserved it as a national treasure for the British people.

You hear, for example, the story of how, during World War II, the entire collection was transported to Wales to ensure its safety. Between 1939 and 1946, a single painting from the collection was returned to London for display each month as a patriotic reminder of the nation's great cultural heritage.

The Jeremy Clarkson Collection

The Jeremy Clarkson Collection DVD [Motoring] | 2,4 GB

Presenter: Jeremy Clarkson | Director: Dennis Jarvis | ASIN: B000FS9SI2 | Run Time: 180 minutes

DVD collection of three Jeremy Clarkson teaches you about The Very Best of Motor World, The Very Best of Extreme Machines, and The Very Best of Speed. Includes Extreme Machines where Clarkson takes a look at modified fighter planes and a super-charged V8 jet boat, Motorworld finding him travelling to Iceland, India, Cuba and the USA to sample the world's different car cultures, and Speed where he examines the speed junkies phenomenon, with a look at rollercoasters, rocket packs and Formula One.

The Very Best of Motor World
Why are Italians are more interested in looking good than looking where they’re going? Why do Indians crash a lot? How can an Arab describe himself as ‘not a rich man’ with four of the world’s most expensive cars on his drive? Clarkson takes a look at car cultures around the globe where the car can be an obsession, a tool of the devil, a work of art, a political statement or just the most fun ever.

The Very Best of Extreme Machines
“Don’t get in Jeremy, you’ll kill yourself”. Wise but wasted words as Jeremy Clarkson puts the ‘pedal to the metal’ and takes a ride in the most formidable vehicles the world has to offer. We meet the machines and the men who are mad enough to drive them - the fighter planes modified to fly twice as fast as their makers intended and the jet boat best described as a super charged V8 water pump nesting in a soap dish. If it really is like riding a hand-grenade with the pin pulled out, then Jeremy’s up for it.

The Very Best of Speed
What kind of idiot would tether himself to a rocket and fly at over 100 mph through a New Zealand canyon; put their mum on The Big One - the world’s fastest roller coaster or take on Michael Schumacher in a Formula One Ferrari? In a series of foolhardy but thrilling rides, Jeremy Clarkson tries his luck at a bobsleigh, piloting a jet fighter, dragboat racing, jet-biking, driving across the Bonneville Flats at over 250 mph and other speed-freak madness, as he attempts to define the skills, thrills, and beauty of breakneck speed.

Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition

Great Minds of the Western Intellectual Tradition | 13.34 GB

AVI | 128 kbps | 640 x 480 | 84 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture

For 3,000 years, mankind has grappled with life's most fundamental questions.

* What is real?
* What should be the purpose of my life, and how should I lead it?
* Who or what is God?
* How can there be freedom in a world determined by causal laws?
* When is it legitimate for one person to have power over others?
* What is justice? Beauty?

These are the crucial questions that thoughtful men and women have pondered since civilization began. The most brilliant minds in history focused on these questions—and their search for answers has left us an intellectual legacy of unsurpassed depth and richness.

Two Cities and the World They Created

The Western tradition is a blend of two outlooks that are characteristic of the ancient cities that generated them: Athens and Jerusalem.

Western monotheism and its philosophical entailments—faith as an alternative to reason, mystic ecstasy, dogmatic scripturalism, and the assumed equality of all souls in the sight of God—ultimately derive from Jerusalem.

Athens is the city of inquiry, hubris, and emancipation. The rationalism of Western culture, with its unprecedented control over nature, is a perennial element in Western philosophy, and it originates in Greece.

Jerusalem supplies the mythos of the West and its holy text; Athens supplies the critical and self-critical spirit, which animates the Promethean and perhaps Faustian history of Western thought.

In this course, you see the synthesis and tension between these two traditions over hundreds of years.

Two Sets of Issues—Three Millennia of Debate

Philosophy in the West has centered on two basic sets of issues.

One: What is the world and what can we truly know about it (metaphysics and epistemology)?

Two: How should we live (ethics, social and political theory, and existentialism)?

You learn how different thinkers address these issues in dramatically different ways. Yet you also see that this variation is not random; entire philosophical epochs can be defined by shared approaches to these basic questions, despite a plethora of different solutions.

The course is in seven parts. Each part covers a specific period in the history of philosophy. Each of the seven parts begins with an introductory lecture to orient you to the period and the philosophers and ideas you study in that part.

In The Studio With Scott Burdick ISO

In The Studio With Scott Burdick ISO | 16.1 GB

This is the first of 4 videos we filmed in Scott Burdick's studio located in North Carolina.

This first video In the Studio with...Scott Burdick is the longest and offers a great substitute to a workshop with Scott, as it is as informative as the program he would offer in such a class. With limited time to satisfy his gallery and invitational exhibition commitments, Scott is not available to teach as many workshops as students would like. This is a superlative alternative to studying with Scott.

Unlike workshop demonstrations of three hours or less, this painting was produced over several days' time, and is approached from the viewpoint that it is gallery-bound. Scott is careful to explain what he does differently in his own studio when the pressures of a workshop are not a factor. We all want to know how the greatest artists "really" paint when not pressed for time. This video is the answer to that question.

A world traveler, Scott has captured the indigenous costumes of the peoples of the world and has become known for his compelling figure paintings of the peoples of China, Nepal, Thailand, and now.....Peru. While he often paints small sketches or draws these subjects on location in these exotic places, his major works (like this one) are painted back in the comfort of his studio from the considerable library of photographs that he and his wife (artist Sue Lyon) take while on these trips.

This video shows how Scott works from one set of photographs to complete this striking painting.....and how he selects the information from the photograph for his reference. As a painter thoroughly schooled and practiced in painting from the live model, he offers constructive advice on how to apply that knowledge to original photo references in circumstances where painting from life is not possible.

Scott is a very verbal, articulate instructor, and this video is completely filled with his valuable commentary & instruction from start to finish. It will be a classic that should be in every aspiring painter's library.

The Teaching Company - Chaos

The Teaching Company - Chaos DVD | 5,1 GB

Taught by Steven Strogatz, Cornell University / Ph.D., Harvard University | ISBN: 1598034502 |$79.98
Course No. 1333 (24 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)

It has been called the third great revolution of 20th-century physics, after relativity and quantum theory. But how can something called chaos theory help you understand an orderly world? What practical things might it be good for? What, in fact, is chaos theory? "Chaos theory," according to Dr. Steven Strogatz, Director of the Center for Applied Mathematics at Cornell University, "is the science of how things change." It describes the behavior of any system whose state evolves over time and whose behavior is sensitive to small changes in its initial conditions.

The 24 lectures of Chaos take you to the heart of chaos theory as it is understood today. Taught by Professor Strogatz, an award-winning Ivy League professor and a scientist described by Nature magazine as "one of the most creative biomathematicians of the past few decades," Chaos introduces you to a fascinating discipline that has more to do with your everyday life than you may realize.

The Teaching Company - Earth's Changing Climate DVD

The Teaching Company - Earth's Changing Climate DVD | 7,4 GB

Taught by Richard Wolfson, Middlebury College / Ph.D., Dartmouth College | $199.95
Course No. 1219 (12 lectures, 30 minutes/lecture)

In 2007 the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change concluded that "warming of the climate system is unequivocal, as is now evident from observations of increases in global average air and ocean temperatures, widespread melting of snow and ice, and rising global mean sea level." Representing a consensus of hundreds of scientists, the report went on to note that human activity is "very likely" the cause. This course of 12 half-hour lectures reviews the most up-to-date research on climate change, explaining the concepts, tools, data, and analysis that have led an overwhelming number of climate scientists to conclude that Earth is warming and that we humans are in great part responsible.
